Press Release | Squeeze my Lemon
RACHAEL DAVIES | Squeeze my Lemon
9 January 2016 – 5 March 2016
Galleri Hesselboe is proud to announce an exhibition of recent works by London-based artist Rachael Davies. The exhibition is Davies’ first solo show since she graduated from Camberwell College of Arts (2015).
The work Davies produces is both an outcome of an observation of the industrial world that we live in. It is driven by the desire to understand the world through the means of making, production and labour. Interested in the role and processes of commerce particularly within retail on the high street, her work draws on branding, aesthetics, display and business strategies. This interest as a starting point directs the work to be situated in the most basic, everyday, mass-produced, domesticated objects. By taking an object, already circulating as a familiar commodity, and remaking it by hand as precisely as possible, the commodity status of the object is exploited. The objects chosen are so commonly interacted with every day and often on a physical and intimate level, for example holding the light pull in your hand, yet both their presence, design and production goes seemingly ignored. The remaking of these objects re-exposes them as objects on another level.
The remaking of these particular chosen objects questions the value of the re-made object in terms of both the readymade and the re-made. Is the replica more valued by the consumer because it is hand-made or not? The replica is no longer made for its original function (even though is more than capable of it) does this make it less desirable or valuable for the consumer? Is it more valuable because it is made with the intention of being an artwork? These questions undoubtedly bring to light the question of the value of labour for an artist making works within today’s capitalist society. These works ask whether artistic labour is more or less valuable than industrial or mechanical labour and what the worth of the objects are if they are produced in this way.
